The month of January is well underway and while some people are huddling together just to avoid the bitter cold, teammates on fields huddle to strategize the best approach to ensure the win! Although sports were never in my DNA, it's hard to ignore the enthusiasm that permeates daily conversation. And the impact of the moment is not lost on me. During my father's recent health crisis, I was overwhelmed and exhausted. This underscored my need for community, and I was so grateful for the teamwork that offered me a reprieve.
The Miami Dolphins are currently navigating a situation where many players have sustained injuries, therefore, athletes who have been waiting in the wings have been pushed into the limelight, giving them a rare moment to shine. Professional teams realize how important it is to have a shared commitment to the vision; no one has a trivial role. If there are holes in the strategy, lack of focus, or an individualistic mindset, failure is certain. People who are passive are passed over because quality players win games!
For these reasons, all sports have a draft system; as we build momentum for 2024, it is important to take personal inventory. As the pressure mounts in our lives, we should prayerfully consider the support system that fortifies the weakest areas. A good scout examines a potential player’s physical prowess as well as character traits, intelligence, ability to withstand pressure, integrity, etc. and they replay films that demonstrate qualities that the team most desperately needs. It is vital to pick the right people for your team!
The new year holds great promise, but only if our lives are surrendered to The Captain. Who can you count on when you fall? Your inner circle matters more than you know. Do you recognize the people in your life who will walk through fire for you and fill in as starters (without missing a beat) during your recovery so that you can successfully continue your season? Even Jesus drafted twelve disciples for His team. Our time on earth is finite and the mandate is clear. As you plan your 2024, who will fill the vacancies in your life?
Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 (NLT)
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.
