When Darkness Hides

December is more than just the end of the year. It is a time when the world stops to admire light in all of its forms. As 2020 takes its final bow, and no one wishes for an encore, the reviews are in agreement; the darkness has been suffocating. The medical experts, armed with spiking COVID graphs and alarming mental health statistics, have issued their grim prognosis: Brace yourself for the gloomiest days of winter! But is that the final word?

During Hanukkah, Jewish tradition holds sacred the idea that God allowed the lamps to continue burning when common sense (and the oil supply) dictated otherwise. When light is introduced into the equation, darkness hides and is no longer a factor. Darkness is temporary. Light is eternal. In many homes this year, the Christmas trees and lights made an early appearance. Not because conditions had improved, but because hope drives out fear. When divinity and humanity met in a manger, hope was born and light came.

Candles often symbolize holy illumination and human commitment; both are equally important. Wisdom comes from heaven in the posture of prayer. Even if Santa does virtual chimney duty this year, there is purpose in the season and a mandate for joy. Our guide knows the route and has ample light for the journey. In fact, we are tasked with sharing that light in both practical and spiritual ways with other weary travelers. St. Francis Of Assisi once said, “All the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.”

Celebrate your life and God's hand in it. No, this year has not produced the life we had imagined. But we never walked alone. This might not feel like a Hallmark Movie Christmas, but joy is a choice. Whether you are decking the halls or hibernating through this winter, remember one thing: Because of Jesus Christ, darkness hides and loses its grasp on you. The most beautiful miracles are birthed in the darkest moments, but morning is coming!

"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness can never extinguish it."

John 1:5 (NLT)

Thank you so much for the reminder. I will strive to make December a month of light. I will let the light shine in my life and be a light to others. I have so much to be thankful for and there is no darkness in Christ. My prayers to all are that God will light up your hearts and bless you richly. Happy holidays!
