Open Arms

The first expression of our humanity is verbal language. As I pondered the topic for this blog, I thought about how our body language sometimes communicates volumes more than our words ever could. After all, those subtle (or not so subtle) cues often belie our most noble public professions of faith and love. Closed arms symbolize rejection or disengagement, while open arms are a sign of welcome. Children know the art of running expectantly across the sizzling summer pavement and leaping into open arms already positioned in the pool. Why? Surrender and trust are natural extensions of relationship.

The past year has been full of adversity and turbulence. In essence, this storm has knocked the wind out of our sails and allowed very little time for us to regroup. It is natural to resort to our familiar defense mechanisms to avoid further hurt. Many of us have experienced fear or loss. All of our lives have changed drastically; we never saw it coming. So how does God expect us to respond to a brand new year during a season of protracted pain? This is a topic that is very personal to me. I often struggle with anxiety and fear, so coping with change is not my favorite pastime. Ironically, God often rocks the boat so that we will walk on water.

I am not a risk-taker by nature, and yet, I am inspired by those who seem to have adventure written into their DNA. Storm chasers occasionally place themselves in harm's way in exchange for a once-in-a-lifetime experience. They understand the unharnessed power of the storm, but they also have an unquenchable thirst for first-hand knowledge. I admire adrenaline junkies who brave the tallest roller coasters with their arms wide open as they reach the pinnacle, fully embracing the emotions and excitement of the moment. While I live vicariously through their stories, they write their own scripts and spurn predictability.

The calendar year is simply a man-made construct, but our God is timeless. 2021 offers a fresh opportunity to learn and practice the art of childlike trust. Extended arms signify worship and spiritual surrender. Why not embrace the destiny that waits for you just behind the turbulence? The past year has stretched our capacity for faith and heightened our awareness that we are not in control. When arms are wide open, we exchange distress for His comfort that hushes the howling winds. Conversely, in an atmosphere of closed posture, doors to destiny remain locked while rejection and depression are magnified.

Finally, children love surprises. A good parent gives simple instructions and knows that a young child can't process all of the reasons yet. God's character should reassure us of this: Storms are purposeful and there are unexpected blessings falling in the rain! It's time to drop our defenses and trust in the unwavering goodness of God, regardless of our preconceived notions or 2020 disappointments. Take the hand that has been waiting for you to finally let go of the boat. Welcome His presence in this storm and embrace January- remembering that Jesus opened His arms in death so that you could open yours to new life!

I know the plans I have for you,” announces the Lord. “I want you to enjoy success. I do not plan to harm you. I will give you hope for the years to come.
