It’s August. The beginning of the hottest days of summer. That predictably uncomfortable time for students to become initiated into the new normal for the 2020-2021 school year. In Florida, it’s smack in the middle of hurricane season. To be sure, August is an intense month with the smothering heat to prove it!
This August holds seeds of promise and possibility, but only for those with the audacity to embrace the dog days as God days.
Perhaps the phrase “dog days” conjures up images of dogs panting desperately for some reprieve from the sweltering summer, but (Attention history nerds) the ancient Greeks and Romans believed that these days could bring fever, bad luck or catastrophe. If literature is your comfort zone, then consider how The Iliad referred to Sirius as Orion’s dog rising and thus, the star carried dark connotations of war and disaster. Floral shops are busy arranging gladioli (referred to as “sword lilies” and widely known as the August flower), the symbolic bouquets reminding weary recipients to summon their strength to face adversity. I picture something else.
A tragedy averted. Divine appointments. God in the details. Air conditioning in the middle of this fiery furnace of COVID-19. A month full of miracles and God moments. In other words, “The God Days of Summer” are here and they must be welcomed with open arms. God is a Good Father and that knowledge is the game-changer. Political tension, global chaos and natural storms may have caused a heatwave, but there is a cool and refreshing fountain of living water. Plant seeds of destiny in spite of the parched August soil, and wait expectantly for the rain!
John 4:14 NKJV
“But whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life.”
