“Convergence” By: Wendy Aguiar

Merriam-Webster defines the act of converging as moving toward union or uniformity, but it also links the word to the development of similar traits based on environments. When I think of convergence, I picture several streams of information merging to create something powerful. Perhaps overwhelming. Undoubtedly dangerous, if left unchecked. September is a time of competing priorities, political pandering, crisis fatigue and solemn remembrance. Social media creates a culture of conformity and reinforces the nagging feeling that you just aren’t enough. So, what does that mean and why does it matter? I’m so glad you asked.

When I am on emotional overload, I tend to shut down. Perhaps you can relate. Multi-tasking is not in my D.N.A. Neither is high tolerance for protracted periods of stress. Yet here we are. Our collective society is overwhelmed, walking around in a zombie-like state, checking the required boxes of life without really living it. Social trends and expectations can be a source of additional pressure. Especially, when others fail to “see” the real you. But we may crave acceptance so much that we overextend ourselves, risking total burnout. Guilty as charged.

It seems logical that convergence might lead to greater impact. Right? Not so fast. Quantity has never dictated quality. In fact, the conformity mindset of a caffeine-fueled generation is stealing the individual identity and the creative energy that fuels innovation. These are the times for steadfast endurance. We need to tap into our energy reserves in order to run the race set before us with excellence. Have you ever tried to have a conversation with someone only to become background noise as he or she instinctively checks emails and texts with a courteous nod? Most of us have developed bad habits to keep up with unprecedented demands in a hostile environment. The new normal. Merging. Zooming. Conforming. Producing. Yet, still hurting.

I challenge you to opt for the lifestyle of the quiet stream instead of the convergence. Where there is a confluence of rivers, the combined flow becomes the mainstream. Although there is greater force, the original tributary is no longer recognizable. My point is that popular opinions aren’t mandates and the “mainstream” might not flow towards your unique destiny. Strive for excellence and develop your gift, but don’t fall into the comparison trap. Steve Jobs once said, “Do not try to do everything. Do one thing well.” For September, choose to minimize distractions and maximize your impact because YOU ARE ENOUGH!

Romans 12:2 NLT

“Don’t copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect.”
